URBAN DECAY liquid LIPSTICK REVIEW

Urban Decay Vice Lip Bond

Fun fact – I worked for Urban Decay back in 2012 for around 2.5 years. I used to absolutely love the brand but it’s been a long time since I’ve purchased any of their products. Recently it seems to have dropped off the radar a little with other make-up brands emerging but I am excited to see what their newer products are like.

Here’s is a throwback picture of 19 year old me working for Urban Decay. Feels like a life time ago!

I’m going to start off by saying this lipstick has some pretty bold claims!

Smudge resistant, transfer proof and up to 16 hours wear – this had me sold!

I am however skeptical as I’ve tried many long wear lip products in the past and none of them have lived up to the claims. Most liquid lipsticks for me have been so drying, uncomfortable and quite frankly look awful after a few hours wear. So I am really hoping this Urban Decay Vice Lip Bond lives up to its bold claims.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS…

I chose shade ‘Text em’ as it seemed to be the closest colour online to what I’d usually pick. The packaging is very unusual it has an ever so slight wave shape. It doesn’t make it particularly comfortable to hold so I’m not sure what the reason was other than to look a bit different and edgy.

The wand seems a little too big which will make it harder to get a precise application. The colour is definitely a shade I would normally choose. Sometimes when you purchase a product online it can be a gamble choosing a colour but I am really happy with the shade I picked.

I decided to review this lip product without any lipliner to give it a fairer chance with the transfer resistant claims.

This is a picture straight after applying the Urban Decay Vice Lip Bond.

The Vice lip bond felt comfortable on the lip and had a nice glossy appearance.

A few minutes later I did take a sip of coffee and it transferred on to the cup which I was a bit disappointed about. I did a kiss on the back of my hand and there was a little less transfer so maybe I applied too much product.

After about ten minutes I did notice the lipstick has disappeared on the inner part of my bottom lip and it had also managed to get on to my teeth – not a good look!

I tried wiping the product off my lip and in all honesty it didn’t actually move. Smudge proof is definitely correct but I would argue it’s not transfer proof.

After about 30 minutes the formula started to mattify. This did disappoint me as I hate matte lipsticks. It did still feel comfortable rubbing my lips together but I didn’t like the appearance of the matte texture on myself.

I decided to try the again with less product. Instead of using the wand that comes with the lip product I used my own lip brush. I blended the product out so there was less product on my lips and really buffed it into the lip. The product transferred a lot less and did look better on my lips. For someone that has a drier or thinner lip I feel this change is necessary to get the best out of the product.

I’m glad I did try the product again and tweaked how it was applied as I genuinely did not like this product after the first use. After applying for the second time with less product and using my own lip brush I do feel the claims of being smudge and transfer proof are correct. Using less product feels more comfortable and produces less transfer. The negative with this method though is that it doesn’t give off a full opaque colour.

PROS

– Smudge proof. Rubbing the lips with my finger did not move the product.

– Comfortable. Although it dries down matte it does still feel comfortable on the lip.

CONS

– Not transfer proof if applied with the wand. Once it fully dried there were still lipstick marks on my mug after drinking.

– Doesn’t stick on the inner part of the lip. Even with a nude shade I had an obvious line where the product wasn’t properly sticking. This could be due to me sometimes biting the inside of my lip but I don’t seem to have this issue with a bullet lipstick.

– Wand distributes too much product and is too large. I do think this product acts brilliantly as a lipliner however it’s almost impossible to do with the size of this wand.

Final thoughts..

I think if you have a fuller lip or prefer a matte lipstick finish this would be a great option. Personally I do not like matte lipstick products as I feel they emphasise my dry lips and the lines on my lips. I much preferred the finish when I applied less product using my own lip brush but I still prefer a creamy satin lipstick for myself.

For someone who likes a liquid lipstick I’ll pop the link down below as it is one of the best ones I’ve tried. For me personally a traditional bullet lipstick works better for myself and my own preferences.
