BEFORE AND AFTER CARE ADVICE FOR A SPRAY TAN
Before your spray tan
- If you are having your nails or toenails done make sure this is booked before your spray tan. If your fingernails are submerged in acetone or toenails in water for a pedicure this is will remove the tan. A barrier cream will be applied to protect the nails at the spray tan appointment so make sure this is booked beforehand.
- DO NOT have your eyebrows tinted right before a spray tan. The tan reacts to the dye and can turn them orange! Have them done at least 2-3 days before the tan so the dye is no longer on the skin.
- Exfoliate your skin for at least 2-3 days before your tan. I like to use exfoliating gloves and a gentle scrub. Scrub your skin in the shower and then apply a rich moisturiser. The reason tan can go patchy is because the skin is dry so prepping before hand to get your skin as moisturised and smooth as possible is very important. Repeat this process daily at least 2-3 days before your spray tan.
- Shave or wax 24 hours before your spray tan. If you wax or shave after your spray tan it will remove the tan so make sure this is done the day before.
- On the day of the tan rinse your body to get rid of any deodorant, moisturiser or fragrance on the skin. Wearing deodorant before a spray tan can make the underarms turn green. If any product is left on the skin it can create a barrier stopping the tan from taking to the skin.
- Remove all jewellery before your spray tan. Certain jewellery like wedding rings can be left on but bear in mind you will have a lighter mark left behind if you do remove after the tan.
- Make sure you have worn loose clothing at least an hour before your spray tan. This prevents any clothing marks on your skin like socks or a bra that may dig into your skin causing indentations.
- Prepare a damp flannel for washing your hands after using the bathroom. Use this to wipe only the palms of your hands after your spray tan.
- If you have long hair pop it up as high as possible in a bun. This exposes the back of the neck to be sprayed and being in a bun ensures no pieces will drop out. A hair net will be applied at the appointment to protect the hair.

After your spray tan
- DO NOT put a bra or socks/shoes on. Wear loose dark clothing and try to stay as cool as possible. Try to stay indoors to prevent any rain splashes on your tan.
- DO NOT wash your hands for at least 2-3 hours after your tan. This allows time for your tan to develop deeper into your skin. Use a damp flannel to wipe the palms of your hands after using the bathroom or apply hand gel only on the palms.
- If sleeping with the tan on wear loose pyjamas ideally long sleeved so you do not put hand prints on your body. If your sleeping position does not involve touching your skin short sleeved pyjamas are fine. Stay as cool as possible to prevent sweating off your tan.
- Leave the tan on for a minimum of 8 hours to develop. Do not apply any facial or body creams while the tan is developing.

After the tan has developed
- Rinse the tan off using no soap to begin with. Wait until the water runs off your body completely clear and only use soap in necessary areas. Do not lather soap all over the body. Pat your body dry with a towel do not rub as this will exfoliate the tan off.
- Apply a light body lotion to keep your skin hydrated. Do not use anything greasy or rich as this will break down the tan.
- Avoid long baths, swimming pools or exercise while maintaining your spray tan.
- Gently exfoliate after the 4th day to keep the tan looking even as it starts to fade.
