ESTEE LAUDER DOUBLE WEAR REFORMULATION REVIEW

Ever since it was announced Double Wear was being reformulated I have been so upset. It was my absolute favourite foundation to use both on myself and clients and I didn’t think the new one could ever compare to the original. I was actually quite hesitant to try the reformulation after reading other people’s opinions. I found the majority of positive reviews came from influencers probably getting paid and the negative reviews came from genuine hard core original Double Wear lovers. This did give me a little bit of a negative mindset so I did invest in purchasing a tonne of other foundations to replace it. After disliking all the other foundations I thought I could replace Double Wear with I decided to just try a sample.

Ok let’s give it a go! I applied moisturiser on to my skin and did not use a primer. I never used a primer with the old version so I decided not to today either. The new Double Wear foundation definitely feels thinner and less coverage. I applied the first layer with a damp beauty sponge and I must admit it did go on very nice and smooth. One layer wasn’t enough coverage for me so I added another coat and it layered well. I like a little more coverage on my cheeks so I applied an extra blob and blended with my sponge. The foundation has a slight radiance but not too dewy. I set with the Maybelline pressed powder all over my face and applied a little extra in the areas I get oily and then finished with a setting spray. The spray I used was Avon Prep and Set I absolutely love this setting spray it really helps control my oils throughout the day and with this foundation having a slight glow I wanted to mattify as much as possible. This is exactly the same method I would do with the old Double Wear formula. The new formulation feels very light compared to the original feeling a little tight on the skin.

I did not feel the foundation settled in any dry or textured areas and looked pretty flawless when I had finished my make up. I finished my make up at around 6.30am.

With the old formula when I was working a long day if I got chance to nip home for a quick break half way through the day I would reapply powder on my forehead and nose. If this wasn’t possible it wasn’t the end of the world, the foundation would still last a full day it just meant I had a little oiliness coming through. I decided not to touch up to get a true wear test of the new Double Wear. The only thing I had reapplied is my lipstick! This is 12 hours later and I am extremely happy with how it looks!

I’m actually really impressed with the new formulation I was very scared it wouldn’t last as long as the original and I can honestly say I think it lasted even longer! I’ll list the pros and cons below comparing to the original formula.

PROS

  • The new formulation lasted even longer in my opinion. The original lasted very well however I would usually have to add a little powder half way through the day which surprisingly I didn’t feel I really needed to with the new formula.
  • The new formula you can layer. If any area needs topping up for whatever reason you can top up. The old formula did not layer at all.
  • More time to play around with it. The previous formula dried down so fast it felt like a race to finish your foundation application. If you messed around for too long and it dried you were in trouble! Over blending caused the old formula to break apart where as the new formula gives you plenty of time to blend before it sets.
  • Gives a natural radiance meaning it’s more suitable for all skin types. The old formula could look quite drying and settle into fine lines so I used to mix a lighter more dewy foundation into the original formula for mature or dry clients however I don’t think it’s necessary with the new formula.

CONS

  • To get full coverage you do need to use a lot more product. It took 3 layers to get the same coverage as the original.
  • Even though I have combination skin I feel an oil controlling primer or mattifying setting powder is necessary for someone who wants a matte finish or who has very oily skin.
  • Didn’t work well with a brush for me. I absolutely loved the finish with a sponge but seeing as it took three layers to get a full coverage I tried the next day with a brush to minimise the sponge soaking up the foundation. I didn’t like the finish with a brush it seemed to cling to uneven areas and not look as smooth.

After trying lots of other long wearing foundation I still believe Estée Lauder Double Wear is the best. It doesn’t cling to dry patches or wrinkles, it doesn’t feel heavy, it lasts all day and feels lightweight. I think you do have to prep and set for your correct skin type as with any foundation and I happened to use the perfect powder and spray for me to get it to last all day! Yes you do need more layers which is annoying but unfortunately they had to reformulate due to a banned ingredient in the EU so hats off to Estée Lauder for getting the foundation as long wearing and flawless without that ingredient.
